Saving Money From Renting Cars
28th August 2010
While just renting a car can be a fairly simple task, getting the best price for your money and effort can be a little more tricky. Small print concealing charges, hidden costs, and deals you would have asked about if you’d only known can all add up to make your rental experience hurt your pocketbook. Being a well-informed renter can provide you with a whole host of options that will help you keep your hard earned money for gas once you already have the rental.
Your basic procedure for renting is fairly straightforward, and should start with you gathering no less than three rental agencies you’d be willing to work with. When you call, the details you’ll want to get information on are as follows: find out where they offices near your pick up destination, find out their availability, check and see if they have any special deals going on during the period you want to rent, and check to see if the agency has any special partnerships with airlines or hotels you plan on using. Having all this handy will help you with your search.
At this point, it is important to keep track of the pick up and drop off locations for your trip. If you do, you’ll almost certainly get hit with extra charges. Once this is done, find out what kind of car size you need, and then reserve the car with a credit card, so you can be sure it’ll be waiting for you when you go to pick it up.
Now, in addition to the usual details of the car rental, there are a lot of factors a renter should take into account. Is 24-hour roadside assistance important your trip? How are you going to get yourself to the car and back from the drop: sometimes the agency will offer to help you with this? If you have insurance, is it good for the trip, and are you aware of your rental options in that regard? And do you need unlimited miles on the rental? Sometimes a mileage cap can reduce the overall price on the rental.
Lastly, keep a few details in mind when renting. Summer rentals are usually more expensive. In-town rentals are cheaper than airport rentals. Have someone older than 25 rent the car. Remember these details, and it will help save you some gas money for your trip.
