Exploring Car Transport
26th January 2012
You will choose Car Transport based on their pricing, your timeline, and the risk of your car being exposed to your elements. You have several options to choose from and it is recommended to consult your shipping company which option is the best for you and your car. It will help you and the company if you tell them about any special needs that you might have well in advance. There are varieties of car haulers that are commonly seen on the road. Most people do not even know what kind of hauler will be transporting their vehicle. Keep abreast of the types of auto haulers out there, so that you can pick the right one if you need to transport a car, boat, SUV, or bike. There are two types of transport trailer – open, and enclosed. Hotshots or trailers are the vehicles of choice for transporting cars. Both have been adapted so that they are perfectly suited for the job. A hotshot looks like an ordinary pick-up, but the difference is that they can transport up to three cars at once. The advantage of using hotshots is that they are smaller, and you don’t have to wait for the empty slots to be filled before you ship your vehicle. However, this means all costs of operation will be shouldered by the single vehicle being shipped, so they have pricier rate. A lot of people choose hotshots because they are better at navigating residential streets. Hotshots are best if you need door-to-door delivery. While hotshots can only accommodate a maximum of three cars, tractor trailers can transport 3 to 12 vehicles at a time, although it still depends on the size of the connected trailer. Everyone who is moving a vehicle on the tractor trailer will pay, so it is significantly cheaper. However, you will only pay less if the trailer is packed to capacity. The problem is that you will have to wait for cars going to the same destination so that the trailer is full. A second negative of tractor trailers is that they cannot travel on small, neighborhood streets. These machines are built to go the distance – they are heavy and relatively slow. You may need to meet your driver at the terminal to pick it up. One can divide trailer types further into single-vehicle or multiple-vehicle. You cannot choose for yourself – the truck determines what gets used. Hotshots generally use single-vehicle options, while semi-trailer trucks can cope with multiple-vehicle trailers. If the car that needs to be transported is of an unusual shape or size, it can be carried by a semi. The car will be loaded onto a flatbed with the rest of the cargo. A service like this cost a lot more than normal, but it is very safe. A big mystery in the car shipping world is deck selection. Cars on the upper deck are exposed to the elements, and they drip on the cars on the bottom. Both decks have their own risks.
